The Mad Elf Ale, brewed with honey and cherries

Beer Advocate gives it a B+, I give it a Barf Plus.

Honey and cherries are just not my thing I guess, in Troegs Brewing Companies' "The Mad Elf" concoction.

I didn't even bother to finish it. The only thing of note, is the 11% alc/volume, and it's local Harrisburgian heritage. Other then that, if served at a party, I would rather drink water.

Mattdav the Mitzvite out.

  1. There must be something seriously wrong with your taste buds. This is one of the best beers out there for the season. Beer stores run out of this stuff as people snatch it up cases at a time, despite the cost. Whatever Mad Elves you don't want, I'll gladly take. Your ratings previously were about 88/100. I think you've significantly dropped, possibly as low as 52/100.

Actually, I think you're finding out that your palate favors IPAs, pale ales as opposed to ales. I think the bitterness is your thing, rather than the sweetness.

How many more beers do you have in that case?

  2. Boo.. this review is stinky. kidding... people have different tastes, it's what makes the world go round.
I love the ELF and anxiously wait for my case every year. I do think this year's vintage is a little hotter in terms of alcohol being more evident than in previous years, but I usually cellar about a half case each year and the 2007 vintage is incredible right now.

  3. Regs-
Interesting that you say that. The first time I tasted the Elf was a few years ago at a restaurant in Kennett. Loved it. Shortly after, went to my beer guy and asked him about it. He and I got to talking about the Elf and where I had it. He told the restaurant I had it at ages their kegs of Elf at least a year. My beer guy this year had 2008 Elves in stock. I should have got it. Maybe this week. It's an excellent winter brew.

  4. wow. I didn't think anyone else loved it. I think I still have the other Mad Elf left. Drive up here and get it. Whoever is here first wins. But, I am only wearing boxers all day on this snow day.
